Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) For Your Skin

“The basis to a healthy clear skin begins with a comprehensive cleansing routine.”

I get a lot of questions about AHA’s so I wanted to break it down & let you know how it works. AHA’s are pretty amazing & a must have in your skincare routine. The two main types of AHA’s are called glycolic acid & lactic acid. It’s a chemical exfoliant that causes the cells of the epidermis (top layer of skin) to become “unglued” allowing the dead skin cells to slough off, making room for regrowth of new skin cells. Because you are removing the outer layer of the skin you must use an SPF (SUPER IMPORTANT) The layers underneath are very vulnerable to UV rays. Even if your not exfoliating you should always be using SPF everyday, that’s the most important beauty item you will ever buy. If I was allowed 1 beauty product on a deserted tropical island it would be SPF.

What do AHA’s do for my skin?

They help clear blemishes, hydrate the skin and lighten pigment spots by loosening  layers of dead cells clinging to the skin’s surface. They also reduce fine lines & improve skin’s texture. Alpha hydroxy acid is your dead skin “detacher.” Imagine your skin as many cells, held together by a “glue.” AHA works by loosening up this glue and letting the cells fall away easier which reveals new skin underneath.

Lactic Acid ? Tell me more

The greatest benefit of having a professional lactic acid peel is that it is gentler on your skin than most other types of peels.  Unlike a glycolic acid peel or a salicylic acid peel, a lactic acid peel is extra gentle and good for even the most sensitive skin. Lactic Acid peels are a wonderful choice for those undergoing a peel for the first time.

Glycolic Acid? What’s this going to do?

Glycolic acid is the most active and effective of the AHAs. It is the only AHA that is able to penetrate through the cell walls due to its tiny molecular size. Glycolic acid helps to bind water to the skin which increases skin hydration & gives you that healthy glow.

Why should I use an AHA?

To help to reveal brighter, healthier, and plumper skin beneath. If you feel like your skin is looking very dull & unhealthy then you should invest in an AHA. If you have sun-damage and dry skin this will help skin retain more water thus improving the moisture content & allowing your serums & moisturizers to penetrate deeper & work better.

To start seeing improvement you need to complete a series of peels, generally 6 peels spaced between 3 – 4 weeks. If you have acne I would recommend a BHA.

Before you decide to try acid peel treatment, it’s wise to visit a skin care specialist who performs these peels on a regular basis and understands your unique needs.
